Vacalians expands internationally and consolidates its European leadership in outdoor accomodation

February 2, 2015

Following the recent launch of its new TOHAPI brand, Vacalians Group is stepping up its international development with the strategic acquisition of British mobile home operator Canvas Holidays, the Italian activities of CIAT, as well as a premium campsite in France.

Vacalians Group, created in 2012 by 21 Centrale Partners through the merger of Vacances directes and Village Center, has acquired UK-based mobile home operator Canvas Holidays, a major player in the Northern European outdoor accommodation market. This strategic development significantly extends the network of partner campsites, with 2,550 accommodations in 90 additional high-end destinations in Europe, mainly in France, Spain, Italy and Croatia. Canvas, which generates annual revenues close to €M 25, offers packaged camping holidays to Northern European customers, mostly British but also Irish, Dutch and German. This client base expansion takes the share of Vacalians revenues generated by international customers to 25%.

In addition, Vacalians took over the Italian activities of the CIAT (Compagnie Internationale André Trigano) at the end of 2014, representing a fleet of 300 mobile homes across 5 premium campsites in Italy. This allows the group to build on a growing vacation destination, particularly for German and Dutch customers, while structuring a commercial partnership with the CIAT.

Moreover, in the context of the development of its high-end offering, Vacalians has acquired the Saint Jacques beachside campsite located in Brittany, bringing the number of Vacalians directly operated campsites to 44. This campsite is to be integrated in the group’s premium “Privilège” offering after refurbishments.
These acquisitions complement the steady organic growth of Vacalians, which further expands its fleet at an annual rate of 500 additional mobile homes.
In parallel to these developments which enhance its service and product offering, Vacalians Group launched its new brand TOHAPI, with the ambition to provide the best campsite vacation solutions to customers.

Vacalians Group, the European leader in outdoor accommodation, has built a network of 23,500 spots, of which 17,500 mobile homes, in over 260 partner destinations and 44 directly owned campsites in Europe. The Group intends to further accelerate its development both in France and internationally. In 2014, Vacalians is expected to generate some €M 115 in revenues, excluding Canvas.

François Barbier and Jacques Rossignol, Managing Partners at 21 Centrale Partners commented: “These recent developments which significantly reinforce the European leadership of the group and confirm its role of industry consolidator are perfectly in line with the ambitious growth strategy of Vacalians both in France and abroad, and with the vision we share with the group’s management.”

Olivier Ganivenq
, CEO of Vacalians Group added: “In partnership with 21, Vacalians drives the professionalization of the deep and dynamic outdoor accommodation sector. The launch of the new brand Tohapi which completes the structuring of the group’s offer, combined with the recent acquisitions, are key assets to accelerate our development, particularly abroad.”
